    Ueno's original Mihashi has been on this corner since 1948. The shiratama cream anmitsu is the order, black syrup poured over soft agar. Closing days are irregular, so ring first, and weekend queues reach the pavement.

    Tokyo's oldest kanmidokoro, trading in Ningyocho since 1837. The apricot anmitsu came from a pregnant customer's request forty years ago; pick white syrup over black. Closed Tuesdays, and the small room fills at weekends.

    Founded 1854 beside Sensoji, and still a tea house first. The shiratama cream anmitsu is the one to have, though the awa zenzai is the house dish. Wednesday closures shift monthly, so check the notice.

    Kinozen came back to Kagurazaka in July 2025, now in the Sawaya building rather than its old spot by Iidabashi. Order the anzu anmitsu. Stock decides closing time, so go before the afternoon thins out.

    A 1930 wooden house that survived the firebombing, listed by the city since 2001. Have the cream anmitsu, and agemanju alongside. It shuts Sundays, Mondays and holidays, and queues daily since the 2024 drama.

    A Monzen-nakacho konnyaku and agar maker that opened its sweet counter in 1970. The anmitsu, with the paste laid on in a half-moon by spatula, is what to have. Wednesdays are shut unless a temple day falls.

    Folk-craft furniture, a big okame mask over the door, and a bowl heaped with agar, peas, gyuhi and apricot. The plain anmitsu is the order. Mondays are dark, moving to Tuesday when Monday is a holiday.

  8. HIGASHIYA GINZA

    A tea salon above Ginza's main street, where an anmitsu obsessive who has eaten 3,200 bowls puts the shiratama version first. It only comes as a tea set, and under-twelves are not admitted.

    An agar factory from 1946 that sells cups of anmitsu from its own front, nine minutes off Nakameguro. Buy the ogura anmitsu at 432 yen. There is nowhere to sit, Sundays are shut, and afternoons often sell out.

    Down a Kyojima back lane, a former tea-shop worker pours the tea himself. The plain anmitsu carries seasonal fruit and gyuhi; autumn brings a chestnut version. Doors open at noon and stay shut on Sundays and Mondays.

    The Kyoto house's Akasaka tea salon lays mizu-yokan and awa-yokan under a heap of koshian. Order the anmitsu and expect to pay 1,760 yen for it. The salon shuts on the sixth of each month.

    A four-generation Nezu shop that began selling roast sweet potatoes in 1912. Ask for the cream anmitsu, with its home-made vanilla ice on top. Shut Mondays, and Tuesdays too from October to March.
