  4. Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill Takeout Corner

    The takeout counter by the Austria House grills corn and does a very large buttered potato, frozen cobs in winter and fresh from summer. Admission to the hill costs 1,000 yen, paid before you reach either.

    A sake shop by Naebo station where drinking happens standing up. Order the shiokara jagabata, Kutchan potato under Hakodate squid shiokara. It opens at 3pm on weekdays and shuts on Sundays and holidays.

    Ask for the jagabata shokunin and take the shiokara topping if you live here, the Ishikari salmon if you do not. Indoors, open all year, but the eat-in corner is only a few stools.

    Above a fishmonger near Nijuyonken, this one runs on daytime hours only. The shiokara jagabata is 600 yen and the plain version 400, so pay the extra. Twenty seats, and closing days move without notice.

    The stone-grilled jagabata arrives spitting at the table, potato chunks under butter and shiokara. Only the Hei branch on the sixth floor does it, so do not walk into the main shop by mistake.
